Should I use a company formation agent?

Hi guys - I’m planning to open a new cafe in South London, but absolutely no idea how to go about doing it. This will be my first time going into business for myself! I’ve looked at the stuff you need to file with Companies House to get started, and it seems like a lot to take in. Do you think I should just use a company formation agent to do my application instead?

Most people use online company formation agents rather than Companies House online or postal services for so many reasons:

  • You don’t have to download and print complicated forms.
  • You do not have to post any paperwork - you just type in your details online and send the application electronically.
  • Additional documentation can be uploaded online and sent electronically.
  • It’s much quicker and easier - typically, companies are registered in less than 3 hours, compare to 2-10 days for Companies House incorporation services.
  • It’s invariably cheaper.
  • You can check your chosen company name on the agent’s website to find out if it’s available.
  • Rejected applications are flagged up and returned for online correction quickly.
  • Applications can be corrected and re-submitted online on the same day.
  • Company name checks are quicker and easier to carry out.
  • Incorporation documents are emailed to you immediately after company formation
  • Most agents provide help and advice during the registration process.

When you have checked the availability of your company name, and whether to register a company limited by shares (for profit-making businesses) or company limited by guarantee (non-profit organisations/charities), you will complete a quick online registration application that is sent electronically to Companies House and usually approved within a few hours. That’s it!
