What happens after my application is approved by Companies House?

I have just used a company formation site to set up a limited by shares company. I’m just waiting for confirmation of approval so that my business can start trading; however, it occurs to me that I don’t really know the next step. What actually happens after my application is approved? Are there any more steps I must take before I can start to trade? Thank you.

Your agent will send you an email to tell you that Companies House has approved your application. Attached to this email will be the following company formation documents:

  1. Certificate of Incorporation
  2. Share Certificates
  3. Memorandum and Articles of Association.

You can start trading any time after receiving this email.

Your next step will be to visit the HMRC website and register your company for Corporation Tax - this is the tax you will have to pay on your profits. Make sure you do this within 3 months of starting to trade. You may also need to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE).
