How do I reserve a company name?

0

Hi there,

I’m thinking about starting a business in the near future but I need to save up enough money first. I have a really good name in mind so I don’t want anyone else to take it - can I reserve the name without actually starting a company just now?

Thanks!

You have to register a limited company at Companies House to be able to reserve a company name. However, you don’t have to start trading as soon as you register - you can set up a company simply to protect a name and then start trading in the future when you are ready. Lots of people do this.

When you have incorporated your company, please contact HMRC through your local Corporation Tax office to tell them that your company is dormant (not trading). You will find their contact details on the letter that HMRC sends you shortly after company formation.
