Do I need a company registration number?

I’ve been doing some research on starting a company, and I’m just wondering: do I need a company registration number? Can I trade without one as a company, or is it absolutely essential to have?

Thank you

Companies House will automatically issue a unique company registration number (CRN for short) when you register a company. You cannot trade as a limited company unless you officially incorporate (register) one at Companies House, and all companies are given a number.

If you do set up a company, you will receive a certificate of incorporation - this is where you will find your CRN. It is made up of 8 numbers, or 2 letters and 6 numbers.

You must display your CRN on all forms of business stationery and your website. You will also have to provide this number to register with HMRC for business taxes and anytime you deal with Companies House.
