Can I register a dormant company to protect my company name?

I’d like to start a limited company to make sure nobody uses the name I want to trade with later. Is it okay to register a company as dormant just to make sure that nobody uses my name?

Thank you

Yes, of course - this is one of the most common reasons for setting up a dormant company. Your chosen company name will be protected as soon as your company incorporation has been approved by Companies House - no one else will be able to use this company name.

Be sure to tell HMRC as soon as possible after incorporation that your company is dormant - you can do this through your local Corporation Tax office.

Your company can remain dormant for as long as you like. When you are ready to start trading, all you have to do is register the company as ‘active’ for Corporation Tax within 3 months of doing business.
