Can I start trading before my company application has been approved by Companies House?

Hi there. My name is Finley, and I have just submitted my application to Companies House for a new private company limited by shares. I’ve already got a couple of orders to fill, and I’d like to get started. However, I have not yet received my incorporation documents. Does anybody know whether I can go ahead and start doing business before I have received confirmation of my application approval - or do I just have to wait?

You cannot trade as a limited company until your incorporation application has been approved by Companies House and you receive your registration documents; however, there is nothing to prevent you from fulfilling existing orders, as long as you do not give the false impression that you are a limited company. Until your company is officially registered, you will be operating as a sole trader and you will have to report any income through Self-Assessment.
