How do I register a company in England & Wales?

Anybody know how you should register a company in England? And Wales, for that matter, I suppose, although I am planning on basing my business in London. Just need to know how to get started, thanks.

If you wish to set up a limited company in England and Wales, you must send an application to Companies House in Cardiff. This will take only a few hours if you apply online through a company formation agent.

When you are filling out the application form, select ‘England and Wales’ as your jurisdiction of incorporation and provide the following information:

  • Company name
  • Registered office address in England or Wales
  • At least one director
  • At least one shareholder (or guarantor, if limited by guarantee)
  • Details of the company shares
  • Memorandum of association - the members’ agreement to form the company
  • Articles of association - rules about running the company

Once your company has been registered, it will remain registered in England and Wales for its entire existence but you can trade wherever you like. The registered office must also remain in the same jurisdiction.
