Can I use the word 'Group' in my company name?

Is it okay to use the word “group” as part of my company name? I wasn’t sure whether it was legally protected or anything, or if “group” meant something in the Companies House sense. I’m forming one limited company, so it isn’t a group of companies or anything. But the word “group” will go great in my name. What do you think, yay or nay?

Yes, as of 31st January 2015, you can use the word ‘group’ in your company name without seeking prior approval from Companies House. Before this date, you would only have been allowed to include this ‘sensitive’ word if your company satisfied certain requirements.

The recent changes to company name restrictions were introduced as part of the UK government’s Red Tape Challenge to reduce the burden placed upon limited companies. The new rules are set out the Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business Names (Sensitive Words and Expressions) Regulations 2014.
