Can I obtain a certificate of good standing if I owe money to HMRC?

1

Hello - I owe a small fee to HMRC that will need to be repaid in the next six weeks or so. But I’m currently working to set up a branch of my business overseas, and need a certificate of good standing now. Will I still be able to acquire one, even though I owe money to HMRC?

As far as I am aware, you should still be able to obtain a certificate of good standing because it is issued on the basis that your company’s is up to date with its statutory requirements for Companies House, not HMRC.

If it is a considerable fee and HMRC is taking action against your company for non-payment, you will not be eligible for a certificate. But, otherwise, a small fee for HMRC should not be an issue.

Please also ensure that at least one of the directors of your company is a natural person. Companies House will not issue a certificate of good standing to a company if its only director is a corporate body.
