As a sole trader, do I need to register for PAYE?

I’m aware that if you are running a limited company by yourself, you need to register for PAYE even if you are that company’s sole employee. What about when you are a sole trader? Do I need to register for PAYE, too?

Sole traders are not required to register for PAYE unless they employ other people to work for them. The individual sole trader pays their own Income Tax and National Insurance through Self-Assessment. You can register for Self-Assessment here.

If you are planning to take on employees, you should take a look at this HMRC guide about employing staff for the first time.
