Can I set up a charity as a sole trader?

Hello - I am a sole trader based in Scotland. I do business as a consultant, but I would like to set up a charity. Can I do that as a sole trader, or do I have to go about it in a different way? Thanks

The sole trader structure is not used for setting up a charity, but it can be used for other types of social enterprise. There are four main types of charity structure:

When you have chosen the most suitable structure, you will have to register with the appropriate charity regulator:

England and Wales: The Charity Commission Scotland: The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator Northern Ireland: The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland
