Can I register a company by post?

My father-in-law is wanting to turn his sole trader business into a limited company. He’s a complete technophobe, and doesn’t want to do this online. I told him I could do it for him, but he’s do it himself. Tell me, can the registration process be done by post?

Many thanks for your help

Absolutely, that’s not a problem! You can set up a limited company by post using Companies Form IN01, which you can download here. To complete this company formation application, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Proposed company name.
  • Type of company you are registering - private limited by shares or private limited by guarantee.
  • Where the company will be registered - England and Wales, Wales only, Scotland, or Northern Ireland.
  • Registered office address.
  • Articles of association you wish to adopt or use
  • Name and address of company secretary (only if you will be appointing one)
  • Details of each director (min. of one required):

    • Full name
    • Former names
    • Service address
    • Residential address
    • Date of birth
    • Nationality
    • Country of residence
    • Business occupation
  • Name and address of each shareholder or guarantor.

  • Share capital - number, type and value of shares to be issued (limited by shares company only).
  • Prescribed particulars of rights attached to shares.
  • Sum of guarantees (limited by guarantee company only).
  • Signature of each shareholder or guarantor.
  • Name, address and telephone number of the person completing the form.

When you have completed all of this information, you should post the form to Companies House at one of the following address:
