I am a freelance journalist. What type of company should I register?

I’m a freelance news reporter, and I would like to incorporate my business to earn company status. Do you know which structure of company would be most suitable for a journalism business?

Hi Duncan,

The best one for you would be a private company limited by shares. You can set it up on your own by appointing yourself as the sole director and shareholder. This will provide you limited liability for business debts and you will be able to pay yourself in a more tax efficient manner by taking a combination of a salary and dividends.

You can register a new limited company online and it only takes a few hours to get approved by Companies House. Take a look at our limited by shares company guide to find out more about this type of structure.
